ABOUT US:

A community leader in mental health care since 1896, Child & Family Guidance Center (CFGC) takes a state-of-the-art approach to treating individuals with complex mental and behavioral health challenges throughout 8 North Texas counties - Dallas, Collin, Denton (new), Ellis, Hunt, Kaufman, Navarro, and Rockwall.

At CGFC, NO ONE is turned away regardless of their ability to pay. From diagnosis to therapy and medication management, our doctors and counselors help tens of thousands of North Texans each year recover from trauma caused by abuse, severe neglect, and poverty, empowering them to turn their lives around.

OUR MISSION:

To provide quality, accessible mental health services to strengthen children, families and communities.

OUR VISION:

A future where all children and families have access to mental health resources needed to grow into healthy, contributing members of society.

OUR HISTORY:

Established in 1896, Child & Family Guidance Center is a registered 501(c)3 not-for-profit corporation. The agency began helping North Texas families over a century ago. Back then, problems were simple, yet severe. People were hungry, unemployed and lacked adequate clothing for the winter. An organization that would eventually become known as Family Guidance Center was created to stand in the gap and meet those immediate needs. In time, Family Guidance Center expanded its focus beyond the basics to address issues like poverty, alcoholism, desertion and child labor abuse.

The Dallas Child Guidance Clinic was established in 1923 to deal with another kind of problem--juvenile delinquency. The innovative work of the clinic followed a national trend that sought to understand delinquent behavior so that it could be treated and ultimately prevented. A merger of the Dallas Child Guidance Clinic with Family Guidance Center in 1996 created a larger, more efficient organization committed to helping children, families and individuals in North Texas.

Over the last 125 years, our community has grown and changed more than anyone could have imagined. The commitment to building strong families has endured. We see it in our intense scrutiny of schools, in our wealth of family-friendly entertainment, family-oriented activities and the increasing resources to support parents in raising healthy, well-adjusted children.

As needs have changed, Child & Family Guidance Center has adjusted to meet those needs. The agency has developed a comprehensive array of programs that work and that are equipped to effectively prevent and alleviate emotional and behavioral problems in the lives of children, families, and individuals.

The oldest child guidance center in Texas, and second oldest in the nation, CFGC is dedicated to providing quality outpatient mental and behavioral health services to individuals of all ages.

We strive to treat the whole person with individualized treatment planning and proudly offer comprehensive care options including:
  • Psychiatric Evaluations & Medication Management
  • Individual Screenings & Counseling
  • Community-based Rehabilitation Services for Adults
  • Skills Training for Children
  • Case Management
  • Comprehensive Telehealth

By nurturing children, strengthening families, and empowering individuals we are working to make North Texas a stronger community and a better place to live for present generations and generations to come.

"Child & Family Guidance Center has given me life again.  After years of suffering from Major Depression and trying many different medications, Dr. Griffin has become more than just a psychiatrist.  I feel at home here.  - Sandy

"My son was struggling with grades, attention, and getting along with others.  We didn't know where else to turn and without insurance our options seemed limited.  Dr. Young gave us the time and attention necessary to understand our situation and prescribe the appropriate medications.  I have my son back.  - April
